Cobalt Slow Action Point Motor Cobalt is a high quality DC motor driven actuator created to be the best product available for turnout or signal control in any modelling scale from N to O. · Cobalt is smaller yet much stronger: While it is only 45% of the physical volume of its nearest competitor, it has a much higher gear ratio, superior throw strength and far greater stability than any other similar product at the end of throw. · Cobalt is quieter and more robust: The design has been made much stronger than all of its competitors yet it is quiet in operation. We did this by choosing higher quality plastics and specifying a heavy walled internal design that adds to stability while lowering mechanism resonances. Gears are specifically tooled for Cobalt and are made with the best available material which is fibre reinforced nylon for quiet operation, incredible reliability and long life. · Cobalt is voltage tolerant & low current: Even at its maximum, at recommended voltages it draws only 30mA (that is a tiny 30 thousandths of an amp) yet it works well at 6v and very, very strongly at anywhere between 9 volts... and 15 volts DC. Cobalt can be powered via a small “wall wart” type power supply and it can be switched by standard latching type switches, short term power such as pushbuttons or it can even be automated simply via use of DPDT relays. Cobalt is totally comfortable with DCC decoders and any of the low power “stall type” accessory decoder with reversing power ability can be used. Additionally, by adding diodes, AC output DCC decoders with adequate supply voltages and adjustable pulse length can be used. This power supply versatility, combined with very high gearing and variable fulcrum make it as tough or as gentle as it needs to be yet allows it to remain far more stable than any other turnout motor at the “end of throw”... whether the power is left on constantly or turned off once the work is done. · Cobalt is very, very versatile in use and includes two SPDT switches Because it will not relax even a bit at the end of throw Cobalt can be powered by almost ANY method that can deliver DC power and is compatible with almost every DC output DCC accessory decoder ever made. Cobalt has two inbuilt SPDT “break before make” switches for frog power switching, panel lights, feedback or any other related control need. They are able to handle higher power than competitive products and are exceptionally reliable even under adverse conditions thanks to very positive and strong pressure formed phosphor bronze wipers and gold plated wiper contact areas. Because of the very high gearing it is even easy to stop Cobalt mid-throw for control of 3 position semaphore signals and 3 way stub turnout operation! Cobalt has also been designed from the ground up for either horizontal or vertical mounting which Makes it the perfect device for railway crossing barriers and proper control of delicate semaphore signals too. · Cobalt has a positive but gentle and almost totally silent Action: Because of its extremely powerful high ratio gearing it is equally effective when used as either a stall type or short term power device and does not relax at all at the end of throw. Incredibly powerful as it is, it’s also designed to be gentle when needed and so the degree of pressure and range of its throw has been made easy to adjust over a wide range... Therefore extremely positive and silent action is there by design - whenever it is needed and consistently gentle treatment of your turnouts, signals or other items is absolutely guaranteed by design. · Cobalt is easy to install. Each Cobalt turnout motor comes complete with everything needed including the screws needed to fix it to the baseboard (We even supply 5 just in case you lose one). ....and we have also created a wide accessory range including pre-prepared switching. Cobalt has been designed to be installed vertically for turnout operation or horizontally for semaphore signal or for things like vertical crossing boom actuation. The actuator wire is of the correct stiffness for reliable turnout throw and has been pre-formed for easy mounting. We’ve even designed a template that makes it dead easy to get it right the very first time in any scale... Used from above, with the drill kept vertical, it will result in the creation of ready-made accurate pilot holes for you to use when mounting Cobalt. The fulcrum bar has a series of offset holes too, so if you DO manage to get it wrong... You can easily adjust the left/right bias of the throw simply by changing which hole the wire passes through! Where a turnout or signal is close to a layout brace or if a standard direct linkage is not possible, it is simple to arrange Cobalt so that it provides an offset drive via a simple cranked wire arrangement (shown in our “tips” pages in the downloadable manual). · Cobalt needs NO soldering. Its no fun soldering under the baseboard... and edge connectors are hard to find and always expensive. Cobalt has a very high quality 8 way solder-less connector that doesn't even need a screwdriver to give you a perfect connection in moments. (you may find a small blade type driver or similar tool a handy tool for helping with the “Push to insert” connector though) If you DO prefer to solder... You can of course - And to make even that an easy and safe task...we have purposely chosen a connector which uses TWO solder points per connection point, so you can solder to one of these with no risk to the integrity of the connector or point motor, and the solder resist over all parts of the board other than the solder pad mean there is little chance of bridging connections. · Installation template available A metal template is available for precise installation for turnout control in all scales. The template allows you to establish perfect position & create pilot holes for mounting screws from ABOVE the baseboard with zero stress. Its even supplied with the correct size of pilot drill to use with it! · Cobalt is incredibly reliable. The Illumination:

Each lamp is fitted with our new micro NANO-LEDs and wired with the finest wire we could reasonably use… slightly smaller than 0.1mm in diameter… so small in fact that it can be visible yet unseen if carefully placed and painted to match the background.

Installation does not require any serious work on your locomotives!

Because the wire is so small, it needs only the tiniest of holes and even the 4 fine enamel-insulated wires of our dual colour red/white side/guards van lamp will fit easily into a nearly invisible hole made by the smallest drill we could find (#80 or 0.3mm).

Our lamps can easily be installed for use on AC, DC or DCC layouts, and for AC/DC use, especially in a guards van with limited pickup potential, we highly recommend our DCCconcepts flicker free for a constant light with zero flicker on AC, DC or DCC layouts.

The Installation:

This is simplicity itself. We have covered it in detail in our down-loadable instruction sheet, however its as simple as drilling one tiny hole, routing the wires, adding an appropriate value resistor and connecting the lamp to an accessory function on a DCC locomotive or to a “flickerfree” for constant lighting in AC or DC powered locos or rolling stock. We appreciate that its not possible to identify positive and negative easily when enameled wire is used, so we have made the positive wire of our lamps slightly longer in every case. Please note that while tohe poarity of an LED must be correct for it to work, wiring it backwards will not harm it. However, do not be tempted to connect your lamp to power without a resistor inline with one lead - it will be damaged immediately and we cannot warrant blown LEDs.

Lamp intensity and colour:

Even though these lamps were oil powered, they were surprisingly white in reality, as the interior of the lamp had a reflector and the glass was a freznel lenz which greatly concentrated the limited power of the lamps wick and created quite a focused beam, making it brighter than you might expect from the front, with very little side spread to the light.

We have used a sunny white type LED in the lamp, and included several different resistor values in the pack, as some who will want to use these lamps will be modelling a more modern line with lamps converted to electricity… and others will want the slightly less bright lamp of the steam era.

If you wish to slightly increase the “yellowness of the lamp light, this is easily achieved by adding a drop of appropriately coloured dye, inkjet printer ink or yellow paint to some gloss varnish and placing a drop into the lamp from underneath so it will coat the entire LED and interior lamp lens.

We find that a resistor of 50k ohms plus a dimming of the lamp via a decoder CV gives the intensity we like, but that is just our choice… Feel free to experiment here - Colour and intensity are a personal thing so we leave it to you to choose for yourself.

Buying DCCconcepts 4mm scale lamps

The Lamps are available in packs of SIX lamps. The range includes White locomotive lamps, Red locomotive/rear of train lamps and two-colour Red plus White lamps for side or guards van lamps.

The pack contents are indicated by the Aura surrounding the lamp on the front of the pack: Red for red lamps, White for white, and half red, half white for the two-colour red/white lamps.

So... what is in a pack of our Lamps?

Each Pack includes the following:

These are a delight to use—simply remove one wheel, add the spring and replace the wheel-set, making sure you note which wheel is “live” to the track. Drill a small hole in the floor of the coach/tender/caboose etc, and solder a bit of fine wire to the tag end on the spring. Connect the wire to your flickerfree or loco pickups etc.

You will be delighted at the low added friction of these pickups—they will add almost nothing to the drag at all, but will always be able to give perfect pickup as long as you keep track and wheels reasonably clean. 

These pickup springs are simply fantastic to use - We have two sizes, N scale (or for 1.5mm axles) and OO/HO scale (for 2mm axles). Packed 48 per pack, they are a super efficient way to add pickup to ANY axle with almost ZERO added friction to loco or rolling stock. (packs actual avg content = 50!)

At long last….

An accurate working 4mm scale station lamp

(created by DCCconcepts based on original drawings. Available in undercoat and several regional station colour schemes including GWR, SR, LMS/Midland and BR)

We’ve wanted to do this for a long time: Create a finely scaled 4mm scale station lamp with adjustable lamp brightness and in a style that would be appropriate for many, many UK stations.

Well at last it has arrived and it has ended up as far more than we originally conceived…  We are proud of it and have no hesitation in saying that it is without doubt the best small scale lamp ever made available to the modeller.

There is more than one type available too: When we looked closely at the many works drawings we had, we realised that one lamp wouldn’t ever be enough, so we’ve created TWO of them…

Both the classic gas lamp, and its companion Oil fired Yard lamp, so your station, loco service areas and yard scenes can now be truly complete.

We also noticed that height varied a lot….

For example, while Oil lamps used the same basic post they were often needed much higher for use in yards, and gas lamps alongside footbridges and stairways were set higher to aid passengers ascending or descending.

So we made an extension, just like the prototype. Of course, the real thing used one standard base which was “buried” to different levels… not really a practical way to do it on a model, so for our lamps, to make it easy for you, we created two of them, a medium and long “base extension” and BOTH are supplied with every lamp you buy at no added cost.

We also thought a lot about the wide historical time-span these lamps have lived & worked through… even now, many are still in use everywhere!

So… aware that modelers are as likely to model any period between the start of the 20th century and today, we added a final touch we hope you will like…

Just by turning a small potentiometer you are able to vary them from a the realistic softer glow of an oil lamp to the brighter light of a gas light or modern electrically powered lamp… but you can NEVER burn them out, because we have limited voltage output to a safe level no matter what power supply you choose!

We’ve made the choice of how to provide the power easy too - in fact you can pretty well power them with any old 9~15 volt power supply you have lying around, ...from a wall wart type supply to an old DC train set controller.

EVERY pack of lamps has have its own individual light level control PCB, and that PCB is happy to accept AC, DC or DCC…. So you don’t have to worry about it!

OIL LAMPS.

These have a slightly larger lamp head and the characteristic short straight-sided “Chimney” above the lamp top.

 Each pack of OIL lamps contains the following:

A note about colour: We went to considerable trouble to make sure we made the right choices for these lamps, and we ensured that colour remained true to our specification by sending all paint used to our manufacturers rather than relying on any form of colour interpretation.

The paint colours that we used for our lamps were carefully cross checked against all known references and are as correct as it is possible to be  - they are in fact perfectly matched to Precision colours which used for many restorations across the UK.

However there is little that is absolute about colour choices: We are aware that even within the colours chosen, local paint tinting varied, weathering had its impact and of course always, some station and sub areas painted their metalwork differently - for example, whilst MR/LMS used a Crimson paint on lamps, many country stations wore the early MR Green for many years, with some in fact never changing at all!

LNER Modellers - We didn’t ignore you but there really was no usable system wide reference that we could find, with a green that quickly faded to a soft turquoise, a brown and of course, a blue ….all appearing in several references.

We will be happy to produce an LNER specific version if we can ever sort this out to our satisfaction, however in the meantime, we hope you will either adopt our BR Green or perhaps choose to paint your won using out “undercoat only” model.

LIGHT CONTROL PCBs.

One Light controller is included in every lamp pack, however they are a very useful device which can also control multiple LEDs so we have also made them available in packs of two.

About the Lamp Control PCB

The PCB itself is a high quality fibreglass PCB which can be secured wherever it is wanted either with a little double sided foam tape or via the 3x 3mm holes pre-drilled in each corner.

· The input is clearly marked and you can use AC, DC or DCC as long as it is between 9 and 20 volts

· The control circuit is surprisingly sophisticated, using a small processor to control the output of the bulbs in the lamps, or if not used for our lamps, it can also be used to control LEDS (a resistor is needed for LEDs. We suggest 640 ohms—further adjustment can be via the control potentiometer)

· Adjustment is via a 20 turn unbreakable potentiometer. Being 20 turns from zero to full brightness, it is possible to make perfect adjustment, and as it has no “limit” stops, it is almost unbreakable, so can be used without the potential for damage that exists with a low cost standard potentiometer.

· Lamps or LEDs should be connected in parallel. Each lamp board will in fact safely handle 6 of our lamps OR up to 24 white LEDs (Presuming minimum resistance for the LEDs).

· Wiring connections are all very clearly marked, so it will be easy for even a novice.

Like all good modelling “tools” our DCCconcepts multi-gauge rolling roads are of simple and effective design, use only top quality components, are very flexible in their application ...and of course, they’ve been carefully engineered to deliver both long service life and to be affordable, so they offer excellent cost-performance to railway modellers.

Perhaps best of all - We have created ONE design that will let you test, evaluate, set up, run in, clean driving wheels of or just display locos in ALL of the commonly used smaller modelling scales.

N scale modellers please note: As you can see with the N scale Union pacific “dash9” the rollers work well with 6 wheel diesels… however it IS possible that some locos of smaller prototypes with very short wheelbases may have drivers too close together for a roller set under every wheel. We recommend that if you do have a stable of larger locomotives then it will be worth purchasing both an active roller set and an additional ”Support set” so every wheel can then contribute to pickup when you are doing your set-up or testing on the rolling road - however - You CAN use only one set on many occasions - for example, with the EM gauge locomotive above we chose to show you that ONE set of DCCconcepts rolling roads can be quite enough for even a large loco like this WD 2-8-0 and tender.

Changing gauge is simplicity itself… and all you need is 5 minutes with a small cross head screwdriver!

(Tip: Try to work in an area where dropped screws will be easy to find and if possible, use a magnetized screwdriver as this makes the job very quick and easy! If you don't have a magnetic screw-driver, just rub the tip of your screwdriver onto any DC motor magnet, speaker or hobby magnet and it will gain enough magnetism to make life easy for you!)

To change the gauge, just turn the units upside down, remove the screws, place the active or support bearing set into the correct spacer and replace the screw… that’s it!

Each “Active roller bearing set” of DCCconcepts rolling roads includes everything you can see in the picture below.

If you are a Diesel modeller than one set of our DCCconcepts Active roller rolling roads will do all you will ever need…

If you are US modeller who has a collection of articulated locomotives or an Australian or South African modeller with a love of those really impressive Garratts you may need a second set of active rollers….

However... for most modellers who will never need to support more than six driven wheelsets, we have also created a “Support set” to complement our rolling road.

This “Support Set” looks very like our Rolling road and works in exactly the same way to deliver power to any wheel that it is used with.

However instead of two pairs of high quality roller bearings for each axle it uses turned metal supports of exactly the same size, allowing us to keep your overall cost  down while still doing the very important multiple jobs of supplying power pickup and supporting pony trucks and tenders etc...

The “Support set” includes all multi-gauge spacers and shares the same construction methods as the active roller set, so it is just as easy to change gauge.
